After 3 months of testing these portable lights our editors picked their favorites
By Karen Jensen
There's a dilemma that's followed me from apartment to apartment: getting adequate light to sofas and dining tables placed in the middle of large rooms. When I want to lie on the couch and read, the only choice has been a book light or an extension cord plugged into a wall outlet so I can pull a lamp over. And while I always have candles at dinner, they don't work when I use the table as my desk.
That's why I'm so impressed by cordless lamps. They've steadily become one of the most useful lighting choices on the market. They solve a simple but persistent problem: you often need light where there isn’t an outlet. A cordless lamp gives you the freedom to place light exactly where you want it, without the constraints of wiring.
For generations, candles and oil lamps filled that role, offering a way to bring light wherever you needed it. But they come with downsides: open flames, wax drips, and the risk of blowing out just as things start to feel atmospheric.
What we weighed
Today’s rechargeable lamps offer a cleaner, more flexible version of that idea. You can move them from a side table to the middle of a room or outside as needed, without dealing with cords, matches, or melted wax. The best ones go further, combining thoughtful design with flattering, well-diffused light that helps define both the use and the mood of a space.
An iconic Scandinavian design, made portable
Louis Poulsen Ph 2/1 Portable Rechargeable Table Lamp
Why it won
If you love the look of a “real” table lamp — but want the freedom to move it anywhere — the Louis Poulsen PH 2/1 Portable delivers. This cordless version of Danish architect Poul Henningsen’s iconic early 20th-century design keeps everything that made the original famous: the three-shade system, the soft, glare-free light, and the sculptural presence. The mouth-blown opal glass diffuses a warm, flattering glow more like the light from a wired fixture than a typical rechargeable lamp. The lamp works indoors, especially where there aren’t outlets, and outside at dusk to elevate the atmosphere. It’s undeniably expensive, but you’re paying for design pedigree and materials that most portable lamps simply can’t match.
